Yoga for Beginners: Your First Week, Simplified

Every expert once stepped onto a mat for the very first time. Yoga is a practice, not a performance — and your first week is about curiosity, not perfection.

What to Expect in Your First Class

A typical beginner class starts with a few minutes of centring, moves through gentle poses with clear verbal guidance, and ends with relaxation. Instructors offer options for every pose, so you can always work at your own level.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable, breathable clothing
  • A water bottle
  • Bare feet (most studios practice without shoes)
  • That is it — mats and props are usually provided

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Pushing into pain — ease back and breathe
  • Comparing yourself to others in the room
  • Holding your breath — breath guides the practice
  • Skipping rest — relaxation is part of the work

Our Hatha Yoga and Senior Yoga classes are wonderful, gentle entry points for beginners.
